Death, Life, and Rebirth

While my life has been changing, unexpectedly, so have my goals, activities, and directions.

For those of you who have been waiting (I know who you are), _3oo3le is dead.  It’s not coming back.

Well, sort of.

_3oo3leNET will be replacing the _3oo3le Network, chrispunches.com, and all subsidiaries are now null and void…yadda yadda….you’ll figure it out.

This means things are going to be very different, but this could be a blessing in disguise.

The Changes:

1)  The blog will be moving to a new server eventually, to be privately hosted

2)  The staff will be more nodular, as opposed to modular, meaning that while there will be a hierarchy, staff will have more administrative control for development.

3) There will be a scratchpad section for development, as well as a development branch which is content filtered through the scratchpad section, as well as a PR front that contains the results of the development branch to be marketed to the public.

4) There will be much less pen testing, but there will be a few secret projects still.

5) The Humosint project is going underground until we have an effective product. For staff working on humosint related activities, please take down any public mention of humosint not endorsed by _3oo3leNET. When it’s finished, you can ad it up all over the place, but for now we can’t make any of it public. that doesn’t mean we can’t have a semi-functional set of mocks up.

6) Stand by for a new domain name.

ooooops!~

Ok, I am getting done reading up on how to set this up, its a little experimental.

All of your home dirs are /home/common;

All of your shells are /usr/loca/bin/scponly

The contents of your home folder should only be accessible via sshfs.  If you’re able to access it a different way, let me know so that I can restrict it to make the network more secure.

This is neat, as it lets all the work happen a little faster…all the changes are archived nightly with cron, so if we need to revert a few days, we can certainly do that.

I’ll be doing some more testing and see if this works.   For those of you that haven’t been using sshfs, you will need to install it to continue development.  I would suggest doing this from source.

Where is my Shell?

The last network enhancement for a while will be:

a) a wipeout of everything in the current _3oo3SD system

b) a total reinstall of the OS, followed by the restoration of all data into a single dir

c) this dir will be the home directory for all shell users

d) cron will backup the contents of the dir nightly, so we won’t lose any data if someone gets pissy

e) this will make it easy for all the projects to be maintained, providing more development.  its my understanding that some of the staff are frustrated by all the delays getting the network setup for development.  this will not be an issue after this change.

All of your shells will have to be removed and resetup.  Contact me on IRC for your new login.

Apparently the proper procedure for installing a module in UnrealIrcd3.2.7 is making your kernel panic.

Congratulations, Josh Whitney!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my old room mate, Josh Whitney, for graduating BMT for the United States Air Force this Thursday.

About 6 months ago, we had a conversation where I dared him just to go into the recruiter’s office and take his asvabs, as I was still deciding if I wanted to go into the Air Force and he threw a ‘how hard could it be’ at me.

Now, here, he’s graduating BMT before I even go off! I’m so impressed that I wanted everyone who reads my blog to know how awesome I think that is! Good job, Josh! I’m very proud of you. The USAF is one man better to have you, and I know that anything you do will be a blessing for us/them. If you read this, make sure and hit me up so we can look into that buddy program. I have another friend, Scott, I talked into joining who will be going in around the same time I will– im not sure if the buddy program works for three people. We will figure it out. Congrats on the score of 96 (yes, that’s ninety-fucking-six) on the ASVABS, too; You never did give me much room for failure anyway asshole! lol

Thanks man. We’re rooting for you.

_3oo3SD

  • new versioning system for humosint using cron and tar; this will allow all users to use the same dir for development
  • develop some kind of tracking system for changes made to the system, so a vanilla install can be made into a clone more quickly; including accounting for source of scripts and binaries used. (log+repo CMS??)
  • backup everything
  • sort everything
  • reinstall whole system with changes from repo/log
    • preserve users
    • preserve apache config
    • reinstall phpmyadmin and reconfigure

  • reinstall slack
  • reinstall ircd with old config
  • email system: *@chrispunches.com
  • some kind of mouseless desktop environment where i can have a bunch of terminals up, and run gtk apps (installed ion3)
  • configure opers and hostmasks; also add staffer group hostmask

HUMOSINT

  • all members of dev-team group can edit humosint dir
  • _3oo3SD backs up dir and archives it into a root-only dir
  • finish delegation process
  • brainstorm with new staff on how to begin the rewrite
  • actually start working again

Sites

  • Turn index.php into a fully featured, multiuser site
  • Turn south.melug.org into same

Recruiter

  • asvabs (monday)

All the defcon permissions have been removed, all registered users can talk in channel.  you will all need to reregister your nicks.  after that, we’re kosher.

Sorry for the delay, I had to work late :D
